Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometer
The Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometer consists of an Automated Nitrogen-Carbon Analyzer (ANCA) and an Automated Breath Carbon Analyzer (ABCA). The instrument measures the concentration/enrichment of two stable isotopes, Carbon-13 and Nitrogen-15, that are used in nutritional/metabolism research. For example, Carbon-13 is used in the "CO2-entry rate" technique to determine energy expenditure by animals when under field conditions, such as grazing.
