Buck with Transponder
The Calan feeders are opened electronically by a transponder that the buck wears on a collar. Only the buck with the correct "key" may open his feeder and eat. Leftover feed is removed from the feeder and weighed every morning. New feed is weighed and placed in the feeder. Therefore, it is possible to calculate the exact amount of feed that each buck is consuming. The bucks are weighed weekly. Feed efficiency can be calculated using the amount of feed consumed that week divided by the the weight gain.
