Stems are hollow or pith filled and circular in cross section. Flowers and seeds are borne in clusters at stem tips. Stems are mostly leafless. Spikerushes are found in shallow water and moist fields where they may be locally dominant over large areas. This genus of plants include the edible, Chinese water chestnut. Some species are also used as decorative aquarium plants.
