Pondweed - Potamogeton sp.

Leaves may be totally submerged or floating on the pond surface. Stems have many branches and may extend 6 feet or more into the water column. Plants spread by rhizomes and seeds. Small yellow-green flowers and seeds are borne on spikes that extend above the water surface. Seeds, leaves and stems are eaten by waterfowl. Pond weeds provide cover for young fish and other aquatic organisms. Complete removal of pondweeds or other aquatic vegetation can result in lower sportfish production in ponds.
