Milfoil and Coontail leaves compared - The milfoil leaf is composed of a central vein with thread-like segments attached. The leaves and are up to1 inch long and comb-like. Each coontail leaf is forked one or more times, brittle and up to about 1 inch in length.

Milfoils are submerged plants with feathery or comb-like leaves divided into thread-like segments. Stems are rooted and up to 6 feet long. Leaves growing above water appear different from submerged leaves. Milfoils can become a serious nuisance in some lakes and ponds.
