Duckweed - Lemna minor

Duckweeds are small, about .25 inch diameter plants with1-3 lobe shaped leaves. A single rootlet may be attached to the underside of the plant body. They are a favorite food of waterfowl. Duckweed can reproduce itself every thee days, quickly covering the water surface, shading phytoplankton and reducing pond productivity. Calm protected water is more prone to nuisance levels of this plant. Rapid reproduction makes duckweed difficult to control.

Watermeal - Wolffia sp.

Watermeal is the smallest of the duckweeds and looks like lime green colored granules of coarse ground corn meal. It is a floating plant and often found in association with duckweed and mosquito fern.
