The Fish Farmers'
Almanac
The Almanac contains
seasonal information useful to fish farmers and pond owners.
- Feed sinking pellets
when water temperature is below about 65 degrees F. Feed once or twice
per week on warm sunny days. Feed farm ponds sparingly through the
winter, increase feeding rate as water temperature warms in the
spring.
- Plan for the coming
growing season.
- Commercial producers can
use the slow winter season to make marketing contacts, book feed
shipments and prepare pond stocking strategies.
- Drain and work pond
bottoms that need repair.
- Clean and maintain
equipment. Winter and early spring is a good time to inspect and
repair aerators, tractors seines and other equipment.
- Order a new pair of
waders to replace the leaking ones you are currently using.
- Pond dike maintenance
for pond owners. Fix leaks before spring rains refill ponds.
